Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada John moved to Vancouver British Columbia when he was 18, starting an early career in computer technology. A decade later he made a career change into the profession of acting. MacLaren studied at the now prominent Capilano University, as well as ongoing study at the William Davis Centre. He became an integral part of the theatre and film community of Vancouver, working in dramatic TV series, feature films as well as national Canadian and American commercials while also acting and directing for stage. In the mid 90’s he was hired as the Associate Artistic Director of The Vancouver Playhouse. John was the lead actor in the Cannes Un Certain Regard selected film STROKE and has appeared in a number of award winning films including CAPOTE and SEVEN TIMES LUCKY. On CBS’s JESSE STONE mow series he plays Rose Gammon’s (Kathy Baker) husband Jim and on the SyFy Network’s Being Human he plays Josh’s (Sam Huntington) father Neil Levison. He now also coaches and gives customized workshops in Canada, SEA and New Zealand.
